How to Set Up Raken Clock In & Clock Out Questions

Raken Clock In & Clock Out Questions let you customize the prompts employees see every time they clock in or out. Use them for safety attestations, site-specific compliance checks, injury reporting, or any information your organization needs to capture at the start or end of a shift.

To set up Clock In & Clock Out Questions in Raken:

  1. Log into the Raken web app.

  2. Click Time in the left side menu, then click Review, then click Clock questions.

  3. Click Templates, then click + New template to create a question template.

  4. Add your questions, set response types, and click Publish.

  5. Assign the template to a policy: go to Company > Time > Policies > Edit policy > Settings > Verification.

  6. Select your template under Clock in questions and/or Clock out questions and click Save & finish.

Clock In & Clock Out Questions require the Time Clock add-on.


Step-by-Step Instructions

Creating a Question Template

Step 1: Navigate to Clock Questions

Log into the Raken web app. Click Time in the left side menu. Click Review, then click Clock questions. Click the Templates tab near the top of the page.

Two default question templates are available. You can edit these or create new ones.

Step 2: Create a New Template

Click the green + New template button in the top right corner. Give the template a name. You can choose from Raken-provided template questions or create your own from scratch.

Step 3: Add and Configure Questions

Add questions to your template and configure each one as needed:

  • Edit question text — click directly on the text of any question to update the wording

  • Change the response type — click the arrow to the right of a question to select a response type:

    • Yes / No / N/A — employees choose Yes, No, or N/A

    • Yes / No — employees choose Yes or No

    • Checkbox — employees check off the item

    • Text Answer — employees type a free-text response

    • Choice List — employees select from a list you define. Enable multiple responses if needed.

    • Signature — employees sign directly on the device

  • Make a question mandatory — check the Mandatory box to require a response before clocking in or out

  • Add attachment guidance — define what any attachment should include to ensure clear, complete responses

  • Reorder questions — click and drag questions using the handle on the left

  • Delete a question — click the ellipsis (...) to the right of the question and select Delete

Step 4: Add Sections (Optional)

Click + Add Section below the question list to group questions into sections. Give each section a title and description. Sections can be reordered and deleted using the same controls as questions.

Step 5: Publish the Template

Click the orange Publish button. The template is now available to assign to a Time Policy.


Assigning a Template to a Time Policy

Step 6: Navigate to Time Policy Settings

Click Company in the left side menu. Click Time, then click Policies. Click Edit policy on the policy for which you want to require clock questions.

Step 7: Enable Time Clock or Kiosk

In the Settings section under Time tracking, confirm that Employee time clock and/or Kiosk mode is toggled on. Clock questions only appear for employees clocking in via Time Clock or Kiosk.

Step 8: Assign the Template

In the Settings section under Verification, select your question template from the Clock in questions and/or Clock out questions dropdown. You can assign different templates to clock-in and clock-out events.

Step 9: Save

Click the orange Save & finish button. All employees assigned to this policy will now be prompted to answer the selected questions when they clock in and/or clock out.


Reviewing Completed Responses

Completed clock question responses are viewable from Time > Review > Clock questions.

Step 10: Review Responses

Click Time in the left side menu. Click Review, then click Clock questions. Click the Questions tab to see all questions and their completion data — columns show Template name, Question, Completed, Responded Yes, Responded No, and Other. Click the Completed tab to review individual completed responses by employee and date.


Troubleshooting & FAQ

Do Clock In & Clock Out Questions require the Time Clock add-on?

Yes. Clock questions are part of the Time Clock add-on. Contact your account manager to add it to your account.

Can I use different question templates for clock-in and clock-out?

Yes. You can assign a different template to Clock in questions and Clock out questions independently within the same Time Policy.

Can I make questions mandatory?

Yes. Check the Mandatory box next to any question when building your template. Employees will not be able to complete the clock event without answering mandatory questions.

Who can create and manage question templates?

Only Account Administrators can create, edit, and publish question templates and assign them to Time Policies.

Where do I see employee responses?

Navigate to Time > Review > Clock questions > Completed to review all individual responses by employee, date, and question.

  • Clock questions only appear for employees clocking in via Time Clock or Kiosk — they do not appear for supervisor entries.

  • You can assign different question templates to clock-in and clock-out events independently.

  • Mandatory questions must be answered before the clock event can be completed.

  • Only Account Administrators can create templates and assign them to policies.

  • No plan restrictions apply to the Time Clock add-on — it is available on all Raken plans.
