How to Add Pay Types and Classifications to a Time Card

Learn how to add pay types (RT, OT, DT, PW) and classifications to time cards in Raken using the ellipsis menu.

Written by Carolina Manos

In Raken, pay types (Regular Time, Overtime, Double Time, Prevailing Wage, etc.) and classifications can be added to a time card either while you're creating it or after it's been saved — both use the ellipsis menu. This gives you full control over how each entry is categorized for payroll, whenever it's convenient.

Quick Answer

Click the ellipsis (...) on the time card form (or on a saved entry) → Add pay type or Add classification. This works both before you save a new time card and after, on an existing entry.

Before You Start

Pay types and classifications must be configured in your Time Policy before they can be applied to time cards. If you don't see the pay type or classification you need, ask your Account Admin to add it under Company > Time settings > Policies > [Policy] > Pay types or Classifications.

How to Add a Pay Type on the Web

  1. Open a new or existing time card in Time in the left navigation.

  2. Click the ellipsis (...) next to the Cost code field on the form.

  3. Select Add pay type.

  4. Choose the pay type from the dropdown (RT, OT, DT, PW, etc.).

  5. Enter the number of hours for that pay type.

  6. Click Save.

Tip: You can add multiple pay types to a single time card — for example, 6 hours RT and 2 hours OT. Repeat steps 2–6 for each pay type. This works whether the time card is new or already saved.

Do I Need to Manually Add OT?

If your Time Policy has overtime rules configured, Raken calculates RT and OT automatically — you don't need to manually add OT in most cases. The system applies the rules based on daily or weekly hours thresholds. Use Add pay type only when you need to override the automatic calculation, or add a specialty pay type like Drive Time, Hazard Pay, or Prevailing Wage. Overrides can be made before saving a new time card, or afterward by editing a saved one — a confirmation warning appears either way when overriding an automatically allocated pay type.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can't find the ellipsis (...) button — where is it?

On web, it's next to the Cost code field on the time card form. On mobile, it's at the top of the form. It's available both while creating a new time card and on an already-saved entry.

Can I add a pay type override during crew bulk entry?

Yes — the ellipsis menu is available on the crew time card form before saving, so you can add a pay type override for the whole crew at once if needed. For large crews where every employee has the same pay type, if your Time Policy has the right OT rules set up, the system will calculate automatically and you won't need to override manually.

A pay type I need isn't showing in the dropdown.

The pay type may not be enabled in your Time Policy. Ask your Account Admin to go to Company > Time settings > Policies > [Policy] > Pay types and enable it. At least two pay types must always be active.

Can I assign a different classification per project on the same day?

Yes — create a separate time card for each project and assign the applicable classification to each one via the ellipsis menu.
