How to Add Pay Types and Classifications to a Time Card

Learn how to add pay types (RT, OT, DT, PW) and classifications to time cards in Raken using the ellipsis menu.

Written by Carolina Manos

In Raken, pay types (Regular Time, Overtime, Double Time, Prevailing Wage, etc.) and classifications are assigned to a time card after it's been saved — using the ellipsis menu. This gives you full control over how each entry is categorized for payroll.

Quick Answer

Save the time card first, then click the ellipsis (...) on the entry → Add pay type or Add classification.

Before You Start

Pay types and classifications must be configured in your Time Policy before they can be applied to time cards. If you don't see the pay type or classification you need, ask your Account Admin to add it under Company > Time > Policies > [Policy] > Pay types or Classifications.

How to Add a Pay Type on the Web

  1. Go to Time in the left navigation and find the employee's time card.

  2. Save the time card if you haven't already.

  3. Click the ellipsis (...) button on the time card entry.

  4. Select Add pay type.

  5. Choose the pay type from the dropdown (RT, OT, DT, PW, etc.).

  6. Enter the number of hours for that pay type.

  7. Click Save.

Tip: You can add multiple pay types to a single time card — for example, 6 hours RT and 2 hours OT. Repeat steps 3–7 for each pay type.

Do I Need to Manually Add OT?

If your Time Policy has overtime rules configured, Raken calculates RT and OT automatically — you don't need to manually add OT in most cases. The system applies the rules based on daily or weekly hours thresholds. Use Add pay type only when you need to override the automatic calculation, or add a specialty pay type like Drive Time, Hazard Pay, or Prevailing Wage.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can't find the ellipsis (...) button — where is it?

The ellipsis appears on a saved time card entry. If you're still in the creation/edit form, save the entry first and the ellipsis will appear on the saved card in the list.

Can I add a pay type override during crew bulk entry?

Not during the initial bulk entry — pay types are added post-save via the ellipsis menu on each individual time card. For large crews where every employee has the same pay type, if your Time Policy has the right OT rules set up, the system will calculate automatically and you won't need to override manually.

A pay type I need isn't showing in the dropdown.

The pay type may not be enabled in your Time Policy. Ask your Account Admin to go to Company > Time > Policies > [Policy] > Pay types and enable it. At least two pay types must always be active.

Can I assign a different classification per project on the same day?

Yes — create a separate time card for each project and assign the applicable classification to each one via the ellipsis menu.
