When employees work shifts that cross midnight, Raken tracks all hours as a single continuous time entry tied to the original clock-in date. Whether employees are using Time Clock or a supervisor is entering time manually, overnight hours are captured accurately without any manual workarounds.
Quick Answer
Raken handles overnight shifts automatically:
Time Clock (mobile): Clock in before midnight as normal. The timer continues running past midnight — all hours stay on the original clock-in date. Clock out in the morning to complete the entry.
Supervisor entry (web): Enter a start time on one day and an end time on the following day. Raken calculates the total hours correctly across the midnight boundary.
No special setup is required. Overnight shifts are supported on all Raken plans.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Tracking Overnight Shifts via Time Clock (Mobile)
When an employee clocks in before midnight and clocks out the next morning, Raken handles it automatically.
Step 1: Clock In Normally
The employee taps Time in the bottom navigation bar and taps Clock In as usual. There is no special overnight mode — the clock event starts like any other shift.
Step 2: The Timer Continues Past Midnight
As midnight passes, the active timer continues running without interruption. There is no automatic cutoff or warning. All hours continue to accumulate on the original start date's time card.
Step 3: Clock Out in the Morning
When the shift ends, the employee taps Clock Out. The full shift — from the original clock-in time through the clock-out time — is recorded as a single continuous entry on the start date.
In the app's Entries view, the entry will display the full overnight period together under the original start date.
Entering Overnight Shifts Manually (Web)
Supervisors can enter overnight shifts directly from the web app by setting a start time on one day and an end time on the following day.
Step 4: Open or Create a Time Card
Log into the Raken web app. Navigate to the time card via Projects > Daily Logs > Time Cards or Time > Time cards > Entries. Open an existing time card or click the orange + Time card button to create a new one.
Step 5: Enter the Overnight Times
Select the employee. Set the Start time on the first day — for example, 8:00 PM Friday. Set the End time on the following day — for example, 4:00 AM Saturday. Raken calculates the total hours correctly across the midnight boundary.
Step 6: Save
Click the orange Save button. The time card displays as a continuous shift spanning two calendar days, with total hours calculated accurately for payroll, reporting, and compliance.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Does Raken automatically stop the clock at midnight?
No. When an employee is clocked in via Time Clock, the timer continues running past midnight without interruption. All hours are recorded under the original clock-in date.
What date does an overnight shift appear under?
The time card is recorded under the start date — the date the employee clocked in or the date entered as the start time. If an employee clocks in on Friday at 10:00 PM and clocks out Saturday at 6:00 AM, the time card appears under Friday.
Does overnight tracking affect overtime calculations?
Yes. Overnight hours are included in the total hours for the start date and the pay period. Your overtime rules apply as configured in your Time Policy. If an overnight shift pushes an employee over daily or weekly thresholds, overtime is calculated automatically.
Can I enter overnight shifts from the mobile app manually?
