Rounding rules automatically adjust time card entries to align with your company's timekeeping practices. Instead of manually adjusting entries, Raken rounds clock-in and clock-out times to the nearest interval you define — keeping your payroll consistent and compliant.
Quick Answer
To configure rounding rules for a Time Policy:
Click Company in the left navigation, then click Time > Policies.
Click Edit policy on the policy you want to update.
Click Rounding in the policy left navigation.
Toggle rounding on and select your method and interval.
Click Save.
Step-by-Step Instructions
This feature is available on the Raken web app only.
Step 1: Navigate to Rounding
Log into the Raken web app. Click Company in the left navigation, then click Time > Policies. Click Edit policy on the policy you want to configure, then click Rounding in the policy left navigation.
Step 2: Enable Rounding
Toggle Rounding on to activate it for this policy. When off, time entries are recorded exactly as entered.
Step 3: Select a Rounding Method
Choose the method that matches your timekeeping practices:
Nearest interval — rounds to the closest increment (e.g., 7 minutes rounds to 5, 8 minutes rounds to 10 on a 5-minute interval)
Round up — always rounds up to the next increment
Round down — always rounds down to the previous increment
Employee favorable — rounds clock-in times down and clock-out times up, giving the benefit to the employee
Step 4: Select an Interval
Choose the interval to round to: 5, 6, 10, 15, or 30 minutes.
Step 5: Apply Rounding to Breaks (Optional)
Toggle on Round break times to apply the same rounding method and interval to break start and end times. This is useful for states that require break timing to be tracked to a consistent interval.
Step 6: Save
Click the orange Save button. The updated rounding rules apply to all future time cards for employees assigned to this policy.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Do rounding rule changes apply to existing time cards?
No. Changes apply only to time cards created after the change is saved. Existing time cards are not retroactively updated.
Does rounding affect overtime calculations?
Yes. Rounding is applied first, and then the rounded time is used for overtime calculations. For this reason, the rounding method you choose can affect how overtime thresholds are reached.
Can I apply different rounding rules to different employee groups?
Yes. Create separate Time Policies for different groups and configure rounding independently for each.
Should I round break times separately?
Only if your state or labor agreement requires it. Rounding break times applies the same method and interval to break start/end as to shift start/end.
