Raken offers pre-built overtime rule templates designed to match common labor policies and state-specific regulations — including California's consecutive-day overtime requirements. Instead of building rules from scratch, select a template and have accurate overtime calculations running in minutes.

Quick Answer

To apply an overtime rule template in Raken:

  1. Click Company in the left navigation, then click Time > Policies.

  2. Click Edit policy on the policy you want to update.

  3. Click Overtime rules in the policy left navigation.

  4. Select a template from the Rules dropdown.

  5. Click Save.

Once applied, Raken automatically calculates overtime for every time card created or edited under that policy.

How to Apply an Overtime Rule Template

This feature is available on the Raken web app only.

Step 1: Navigate to Overtime Rules

Log into the Raken web app. Click Company in the left navigation, then click Time > Policies. Click Edit policy on the policy you want to configure, then click Overtime rules in the policy left navigation.

Step 2: Select a Template

Click the Rules dropdown and select the template that matches your organization's overtime requirements.

Step 3: Save

Click the orange Save button. All future time cards for employees assigned to this policy will have overtime calculated automatically based on the selected template.

You can still create fully custom overtime rules if the pre-built templates don't match your requirements. See How to Create Overtime Rules for Time Policies.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Do template changes apply to existing time cards?

No. Changes apply only to time cards created after the change is saved. Existing time cards follow the rules that were active when they were created.

Can I add custom rules on top of a template?

Yes. After selecting a template, use + Add pay type to layer additional custom thresholds on top of it.

What is the difference between the California and California 4/10 templates?

The California template applies standard 8-hour daily overtime. The California 4/10 template is designed for crews on a 4/10 schedule — it applies 10-hour daily thresholds for the first four workdays, then reverts to 8-hour rules for any additional days worked that week.

Does Raken recalculate overtime across the full pay period?

Yes. Overtime is recalculated server-side every time a time card is created or edited — regardless of the order entries are made.

Can I apply different templates to different employee groups?

Yes. Create separate Time Policies for different groups and apply the relevant template to each.
